Federal Colleges of Education Can Now Award Bachelor’s Degrees

The government of Nigeria has said Federal Colleges of Education can now give out teaching degrees along with teaching certificates.

This follows a new law called the Federal Colleges of Education Act, 2023.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed this law, and now the schools will start offering both the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and Bachelor’s Degrees in Education.

This change is part of a big plan to improve how teachers are trained.

The Ministry of Education says this is a big step forward for Nigeria’s schools.

In Abuja, the Minister of State for Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, spoke about the new plan.

He said this change is more than just a new rule—it is a strong shift in how teachers are prepared.

He said the plan helps colleges give better lessons and reach more people who want to be teachers.

Now, colleges that meet the rules of the National Universities Commission can start offering degrees.

This means both old and new Federal Colleges of Education can take part once they meet the needed level.

The Minister also said that this change gives teachers better skills for today’s classrooms.

He said this will make higher education easier to reach because students can now earn degrees in education without going to regular universities.

This plan also solves many problems in one go.

It helps colleges get more students, keeps the schools useful, and stops them from needing help from universities to give degrees.

The plan also lets colleges make their own lessons without waiting for other schools to agree.

This makes it faster and easier for schools to teach what students need to know today.
