Federal University Lokoja seeks new Vice-Chancellor for 2026

Some dates stick in your mind, even before they arrive. For the Federal University Lokoja, 14 February 2026 is one of them. That’s when the seat of Vice-Chancellor becomes vacant, and the hunt begins for a new face to lead the institution. It’s not just a ceremonial baton pass. This role holds the reins of the entire academic and administrative set-up.

Nestled in Lokoja, where the rivers meet, the university has been writing its own story since 2011. From two humble faculties to thirteen today, it’s not slowing down. Sixty programmes, a College of Health Sciences, a Postgraduate College — all in just over a decade. The place wants to play on the global field, and it’s looking for someone who shares that hunger.

The role in plain sight

The Vice-Chancellor isn’t just a title on paper. It’s the chief executive, the head of academics, a permanent seat on the Governing Council, and the chair of the Senate. In short, the buck stops here.

Key expectations:

  • Must hold at least a Second Class Lower in the first degree, plus a PhD or professional twin.
  • Ten years in the professorial chair at a recognised university.
  • A steady 15-year run in university service.
  • Proof of steering at least one funded research project.
  • Links and partnerships that cross local and foreign lines.
  • Clear vision, resourcefulness, and knack for turning plans into action.
  • Fundraising skills that can keep the university growing.
  • Skill in negotiation and settling disputes without leaving scars.
  • Strong record in publishing, supervising postgraduate work, and engaging with peers home and abroad.
  • At least 30 citations across Google Scholar, Scopus, and ResearchGate.
  • Delivered an inaugural lecture.
  • Broad, hands-on experience in running university affairs.
  • ICT competence and readiness to push for digital change.
  • Familiarity with Nigeria’s educational system.
  • Emotional intelligence, leadership that values diversity, and the ability to manage a big, varied community.
  • Sound health, spotless character, and under 65 years old by the start date.

What’s on the table

Pay and benefits follow the same pattern as other federal universities, shaped by the Federal Government and the university’s Governing Council.
