WAEC Denies Viral List of 151 Schools With Held 2025 WASSCE Results
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has debunked a viral list claiming it withheld 2025 WASSCE results from 151 schools due to malpractice. WAEC clarified the list is fake and urged students and schools to trust only official sources. Read on to understand what really happened and how to avoid falling for false news.

What’s really going on with WAEC?
On Monday, WAEC released the long-awaited 2025 WASSCE results. But as people were still checking their scores and texting group chats, a list suddenly started flying around online. It claimed that 151 schools across the country had their results withheld because of exam malpractice.
The letter looked real. It had a WAEC letterhead, a date (4 August), and was supposedly signed by someone named Dr Florence Ajayi. It even asked principals from the listed schools to hurry down to the Lagos Zonal Office within 10 working days. Imagine the wahala that caused. Principals panicked. Students were restless. Some parents even started making calls. You know how Nigerians can be when things like this show up on WhatsApp.
According to the letter, schools like Babington Macaulay in Ikorodu, Atlantic Hall in Epe, Corona in Agbara, and even St. Louis in Ondo were listed. There were big names on that thing. It said all these schools had students involved in cheating, and their scripts might be needed for investigation.
But hold up.
WAEC says it’s fake news
The very next day, WAEC stepped in. Their official X (Twitter) handle, @waecnigeria, posted a straight-up denial. They said they didn’t release that list, didn’t authorise the message, and never sent such letters to any schools.
And more importantly, they pointed out something everyone should’ve caught. “WAEC will never ask any centre to bring scripts of candidates to the office,” they said. Simple question: where would schools even get those exam scripts from? Abi, na photocopy? That alone was enough to expose the fake list.
So, if you saw the list or someone forwarded it to you, just trash it. No be real. WAEC urged people to ignore any message not posted on their official pages or shared by trusted media. Don’t fall for every forward you see. Not everything with a logo is legit.
What we know for sure
Now, what is true is that WAEC actually withheld some results. Not 151 schools though. They withheld results for 192,089 candidates. That’s about 9.75% of everyone who wrote the exam. The reason? Cheating. Yep, WAEC confirmed there were cases of malpractice, and those results are still being reviewed.
But here’s the real gist. This year’s overall result no too shine. Only 38.32% of the nearly 2 million students who sat for the exam got five credits and above, including English and Maths. That’s a major drop from last year’s 72.12%.
Dr Amos Dangut, WAEC’s head in Nigeria, said the reason was simple. They stepped up their anti-cheating game this year. The new measures made it harder to cut corners, and sadly, a lot of people got caught.
So, what should students do?
First off, if your result is fine, breathe. You’re good. No need to worry about fake lists. If your result is “withheld,” it means WAEC is still looking into it. Nothing is final yet. Try not to panic.
Second, always check official sources. That fake letter looked convincing, but a quick check online would’ve shown it wasn’t from WAEC. Follow their verified pages or wait for proper news.
And please, spread the correct info. If your classmate is panicking because of that list, help clear the air. Misinformation can mess with people’s heads, especially after a stressful exam season.
Final thoughts
Every exam season comes with its own drama. This time, it was a fake list that caused unnecessary trouble. WAEC has spoken, so let’s hold on to facts, not fear.
As for next year? Let’s hope for better prep, fewer distractions, and more passes. And if you’re still waiting on your withheld result, fingers crossed for good news soon. Stay sharp, no dull am.
And abeg, no let WhatsApp forward give you hypertension.
