Federal University of Education, Zaria matriculates over 5,000 pioneer undergraduate students

The Federal University of Education, Zaria, has held its maiden matriculation ceremony for over 5,000 newly admitted pioneer undergraduate students in the 2025/2026 academic session.

The event marked a first for the University. It also marked the formal entry of the new students into academic life; a big day for the pioneer class, and a key moment for FUEZ.

Vice-Chancellor welcomes pioneer students

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Yahaya Isa Bunkure, congratulated the students on behalf of the Governing Council, Management, Senate, staff, and the wider university community.

He described the occasion as a defining moment in the lives of the students and in the history of the University. He said the ceremony marked their formal admission into the citadel of learning.

FUEZ sets academic and conduct expectations

Professor Bunkure told the students to uphold academic excellence. He said admission into the University comes with privilege and responsibility.

He also said the admission process was highly competitive, with many applicants and only a few successful candidates. Degrees, he added, would be awarded on the basis of academic performance and good character.

Matriculation oath and student conduct

The Vice-Chancellor charged the pioneer undergraduate students to honour the matriculation oath through integrity, discipline, respect for authority, and obedience to the University’s rules and regulations.

He said the pioneer set carries a special duty. As trailblazers, they are expected to set standards for those who will come after them.

FUEZ degree programmes and digital learning plans

The Vice-Chancellor also welcomed the successful take-off of the University’s degree programmes, which marks its transition into a full university.

He restated his commitment to repositioning the University for excellence, new ideas, and wider academic standing through steps such as the deployment of a user-friendly portal and digital learning policies tied to 21st-century realities.

ICT and teaching support

Professor Bunkure said the goal is to build a digitally driven University where technology supports teaching, learning, research, and administration.

He added that the ICT Directorate has been strengthened, with attention placed on e-learning, improved internet connectivity, cybersecurity, and technical support services.

Infrastructure upgrades at Federal University of Education, Zaria

On physical development, Professor Bunkure said work is ongoing to create a conducive learning and working environment.

The improvements listed include:

  • Renovation of the Administrative Block
  • Upgrades to lecture halls
  • Improvements to the university library
  • Enhancements to other facilities

Promotion of Chief Lecturers to Professors

The Vice-Chancellor also celebrated the recent promotion of 43 Chief Lecturers to the rank of Professors.

He then charged the University Ranking Committee to drive steps that will place the University favourably among global universities.

Rules students must follow at FUEZ

Professor Bunkure advised students to obey university regulations and maintain at least 75% lecture attendance.

He also warned them to stay away from social vices such as:

  • Cultism
  • Examination malpractice
  • Drug abuse

He further asked them to maintain cordial relationships with host communities, carry their identification cards, remain security conscious, and make proper use of available facilities.

In a goodwill message, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, a guest at the ceremony and former Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University Kano, encouraged the students to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to their academic pursuits.
