The EU Delegation to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and ECOWAS has opened applications for a funded traineeship for young graduates in Nigeria. The placement is for up to six months in 2026, and the tentative Start month is July 2026.
This internship sits in the Political, Press and Information Section, also called the PPI Section. The call is for young graduates who want to learn more about the work of a diplomatic mission and how the EU Delegation represents EU interests and values in Nigeria.
About the EU Delegation in Nigeria
The European Union is an economic and political partnership of 27 European countries. Outside Europe, it is represented through more than 140 diplomatic representations known as EU Delegations.
The EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS works with national, regional and local authorities, as well as other foreign missions. In Nigeria, the EU has an active presence in health, nutrition, water and sanitation, and access to sustainable electricity. Other areas named in the call include the fight against corruption, drugs and organised crime, support for justice system reform, measures to increase the role of democratic processes, and support for civil society.
Traineeship overview
The placement is based in Nigeria and runs as an internship for up to six months. The successful applicant will work within the PPI Section of the EU Delegation.
The PPI Section supports the Head of Delegation in political relations with Nigeria and ECOWAS. It also analyses and reports on political developments, engages with government and local authorities, civil society organisations, think tanks and the media, and supports the Head of Delegation in his or her observer capacity to ECOWAS.
The section also monitors regional developments and reports on related matters. It supports EU coordination with Member States and handles coordination on political, regional, consular, migration and security matters.
Main tasks of the trainee
The selected trainee will carry out these duties:
- Draft reports on internal political developments, human rights, the economic situation, regional issues, foreign policy, and other policy areas linked to EU interests and values
- Support the PPI Section in organising meetings and drafting meeting minutes
- Support the PPI Section on communication activities
- Support the PPI Section on public diplomacy events
- Support the PPI Section in preparing visits from EEAS headquarters and other EU bodies
Eligibility requirements
Applicants must meet the stated conditions before applying.
Who can apply
The applicant must:
- Be a citizen of Nigeria
- Be currently residing in Abuja, Nigeria
- Be a young graduate with at least a Bachelor Diploma, or equivalent
Experience conditions
The applicant must have less than one year of professional experience after graduation by the time the traineeship agreement is signed.
The call states that other traineeships, student jobs, and volunteering work done during university or after graduation are not counted as professional experience.
The applicant must also have no previous experience of more than six weeks in the EU bodies.
What selected trainees receive
Each selected trainee will receive a monthly grant to cover living expenses. Applicants can check the monthly grant details.
The call also states that all costs linked to travel, visa, insurance and accommodation must be borne by the trainee.

Deadline and selection notes
The application closing date is 19 April 2026.
After all applications are reviewed, shortlisted candidates will be contacted and invited for an interview. Unsuccessful candidates will be notified by email. The call also states that if selected candidates cannot present the required documents, the application will be rejected.
The traineeships can only be offered in compliance with local legislation.
