The Federal Government has launched the nationwide Learner Identification Number, known as LIN, as a digital system that gives every student a permanent academic identity.
The move sets out to support learning continuity, improve planning, and make timely intervention easier across the education system. The Federal Ministry of Education presented it as a major step in school administration; the scale is already national.
What the Learner Identification Number means
The Learner Identification Number gives each learner a permanent academic identity that can stay with the student across all levels of education.
That identity helps track academic progression from one stage to another. It also gives education managers a clearer record base for planning and response.
What the Minister said about the LIN launch
The Honourable Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, described the initiative as a milestone tied to the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He said the plan centres on human capital development and technology-driven reforms in education.
First phase of the rollout
The first phase has issued LINs to over 1.9 million candidates for the 2026 examinations conducted by the West African Examinations Council and the National Examinations Council.
This opening stage strengthens education data management and examination integrity. It also gives the system an Early nationwide base through major exam bodies.
How LIN works with DNEMIS
The LIN is integrated with the Digitized National Education Management Information System, known as DNEMIS.
DNEMIS provides a national register of schools. By linking learners to verified identities, the system builds a cleaner record structure for learners and schools.
What the system is set to improve
The Ministry said the LIN can improve examination security and reduce impersonation.
It also supports the tracking of out-of-school children, dropouts, and learning gaps. Those functions can help officials respond faster where gaps appear; that is one of the system’s central aims.
Next step for public and private schools
The Ministry said it will expand the system nationwide across public and private schools.
It also called on stakeholders to support full implementation. The Federal Ministry of Education restated its commitment to a transparent, inclusive, and education system.
