Yobe Approves Jobs for 416 Nursing Graduates at Shehu Sule College

Governor Mai Mala Buni has approved automatic employment for 416 graduating students of Shehu Sule College of Nursing Sciences, a step aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery in Yobe State.

The announcement came on Tuesday during the college’s graduation ceremony in Damaturu. The governor was represented by his deputy, Idi Gubana.

The beneficiaries include 158 Community Nurses, 196 Basic Nurses and Midwives, and 62 Higher National Diploma Nursing graduates.

The state government said the decision forms part of its ongoing effort to tackle manpower shortages and improve access to quality healthcare services across Yobe.

Why the state took the step

The governor said the approval reflects sustained government spending in the health sector and a clear push to close staffing gaps in health facilities across the state.

He also said steady support for the college over the past seven years has produced good results, especially in the training of qualified health workers.

That point stood out; the state linked the new jobs directly to the need for more trained hands in hospitals and other health centres.

What the governor said about health worker recruitment

Buni said the government has recruited over 3,500 healthcare workers in recent years, with many of them drawn from the college.

He said the aim is to keep staffing levels up and maintain professionalism in the health sector.

The governor also restated his administration’s resolve to keep the health sector high on its agenda. He said the state will continue to give the area close attention while working to build a people-focused healthcare system.

Breakdown of the 416 beneficiaries

The automatic employment covers three groups of graduates:

  • 158 Community Nurses
  • 196 Basic Nurses and Midwives
  • 62 Higher National Diploma Nursing graduates

This breakdown gives a clear picture of where the fresh intake will come from; nursing and midwifery remain at the centre of the plan.

Other projects mentioned at the event

The governor pointed to the establishment of a Biomedical Research and Training Centre at the state university. He described it as a move to strengthen research capacity and support the training of young scientists.

He also assured the college management of continued support and said the government would address its needs. His administration, he added, wants to reposition the college as a leading health training centre in Nigeria.

Buni also praised the outgoing Provost, Hadiza Sabo, for keeping academic standards high.

What the health commissioner revealed

Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Mohammed Lawan Gana, said Yobe recently emerged as the best-performing state in primary healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

He said the result came after an assessment by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum under a Federal Government initiative.

According to him, the recognition earned the state a $1.2 million prize.

What the provost said about past graduate employment

Earlier, the provost said the college graduated 1,485 students between 2019 and 2026, and all of them received automatic employment.

She said the policy has improved the recruitment, deployment and retention of healthcare workers in the state.

That record adds context to Tuesday’s announcement; this was not a one-off move, but part of an existing pattern.

What else happened at the ceremony

The event also featured the commissioning of projects and the launch of a compendium magazine documenting the administration’s achievements.
