FUD Appoints Prof Ahmed Muhammed Gumel as 4th VC
The 4th Governing Council of the Federal University Dutse approved the appointment of Professor Ahmed Muhammed Gumel as the 4th substantive Vice-Chancellor. The decision was taken at an extraordinary meeting held on 13 December 2025. His appointment takes effect from 10 February 2026.
The Chair of the Governing Council, Professor Shuaibu Oba Abdulraheem, OFR, NPOM, said the choice followed a careful selection exercise. A total of 21 applicants were shortlisted and interviewed. At the end of the process, Professor Gumel emerged as the successful candidate.
The Council Chair congratulated the new Vice-Chancellor and offered prayers for guidance as he takes up the role.
Remarks From the Vice-Chancellor Designate
Professor Gumel thanked Almighty Allah for the opportunity to serve. He also expressed gratitude to the joint selection panel, the Chair of Council, the current Vice-Chancellor, and members of the Council for the trust placed in him.
He said he plans to build on the gains recorded by the present administration and work in the interest of the university community.
Brief Profile of Professor Ahmed Muhammed Gumel
Professor Gumel is an alumnus of University of Malaya, Malaysia. He earned a Master of Biotechnology and a PhD in Industrial Biotechnology, with focus on Biocatalysis and Bioprocess Technology, in 2009 and 2013. He also served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the same university in 2014.
He holds a Professional Master’s Degree in Public Policy and Administration, an Advanced Diploma in Education, a Diploma in Data Processing and Information Technology, and a Certificate in Advanced Digital Appreciation Training.
His PhD thesis received a Distinction at the University of Malaya.

Professional Memberships and Service
Professor Gumel is a registered biotechnologist and a board member of the International Institute of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering. He is also a member of several professional bodies across Nigeria, Europe, Asia, and the United States.
He serves as a research consultant to AlphaSights, London, and has worked as a reviewer and board member for several international journals. He has attracted multiple research grants to the university.
Service at Federal University Dutse
Professor Gumel joined the Federal University Dutse in 2015. He has held several roles, including Level Coordinator, Postgraduate Coordinator, Head of Department, Dean of Students’ Affairs, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Central Administration.
He has received over 34 awards and recognitions for service within and outside the university. He has also attended conferences and workshops in countries such as the United States, China, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Turkey, and Oman.
Professor Gumel is married and has children.
