The Florence Bamidele Makanjuola Scholarship for Women, FBMSYW, has opened its 4th scholarship call for young Nigerian women in secondary schools and universities.
Opekete Foundation created the award in memory of late Mrs Florence Bamidele Makanjuola, known as FBM, and it supports girls and women who plan to study, or already study, Nursing or Teaching in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
About the Florence Bamidele Makanjuola Scholarship
The scholarship keeps alive the values linked with late Florence Bamidele Makanjuola, who cared deeply about women’s education and financial independence.
The award targets young women facing extreme financial hardship; many of them cannot continue their studies without outside support. It does more than give a bursary, as selected beneficiaries also take part in mentoring, community projects and work placements.
Who the Scholarship Is For
The Florence Bamidele Makanjuola Scholarship is for female Nigerian students who want to study Nursing or Teaching in STEM.
A candidate may be in secondary school, seeking admission into a university, or already enrolled in a public university while applying for this support. The applicant must show interest in Nursing or STEM Teaching and must also show the personal drive needed for steady academic work.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the listed conditions.
She must:
- Be female
- Be Nigerian
- Meet the minimum academic qualifications
- Pass an aptitude or behavioural test
- Have gained admission into a public university, or be currently enrolled in one
- Attend, or plan to attend, a public or federal government-owned senior secondary school or university
- Intend or be willing to study Nursing or Teaching in STEM at university
- Submit a motivational essay explaining why she should receive the scholarship
- Explain the financial hardship that makes her unable to afford tuition
Academic Requirements for Secondary School Applicants
A secondary school applicant must have at least 5 As or Bs in Junior WAEC.
The required subjects must include English Language and Mathematics, plus any other 3 major subjects.
Academic Requirements for University Applicants
A university applicant must have at least 5 As or Bs in WAEC or NECO.
For Nursing, the required subjects are:
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Biology
- Physics
- Chemistry
For Teaching, the required subjects are:
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Any 3 other STEM-related subjects
The O’level result must not be from more than one sitting.
JAMB and GPA Requirements
Applicants seeking university admission must meet the required JAMB cut-off score for the chosen course and school.
Students asking for funding support to complete university must have a minimum GPA of 3.5.
Conditions for Keeping the Scholarship
Secondary school awardees must maintain an average of 65% across all subjects.
University awardees must maintain a minimum CGPA of 3.5 out of 5 each semester to remain on the programme.
How to Apply for Florence Bamidele Makanjuola Scholarship
Applicants should complete the online FBMSYW application form.
Each applicant must also write a 300-word essay explaining why she deserves the scholarship.

Applicants must upload all supporting documents in PDF format.
The required documents are:
- O’level or SSCE result
- JAMB result
- LGA identification or state of origin document
- Admission letter
- Birth certificate
- Academic transcript
- National Identity Number, NIN
- Passport photograph
Selection Process
After successful screening, shortlisted applicants will be contacted for an aptitude test and virtual interview.
A panel will review the aptitude test result, completed application, interview performance and funding circumstances. The decision will then be shared within the relevant timelines.
