The MTN Foundation/MUSON Music Scholarship is now open for 2025/2026. This post shares how to apply, key dates, what you’ll be tested on, and who can join. If you’ve got strong music skills and a dream, you might want to read this.
If music is more than just background noise to you, if you find yourself reading scores like they’re your mother tongue, then this could be the chance you’ve been waiting for. MUSON, Nigeria’s best-known music school, is teaming up with MTN Foundation again for their yearly music diploma scholarship, and applications are now open for the 2025/2026 session.
Now, before your keyboard excitement turns to confusion, here’s what the whole thing is about, in plain terms.

What This Scholarship Is Really About
Let’s start from the heart of it. MUSON is offering a two-year full-time music diploma, not some random crash course. This one runs deep. With backing from MTN Foundation, it gives young musicians a shot at quality training, the kind that aligns with international standards.
Whether you sing, play the cello, tap drums or blow sax, you’ll be trained properly. Not just by vibes and YouTube videos.
And yeah, it’s free if you get in. That’s where the scholarship comes in.
Key Dates You Shouldn’t Miss
Everything kicks off in September. Mark these on your calendar or scribble on a sticky note.
Written Exam (Music Theory + General Knowledge)
- Date: 2nd September 2025
- Time: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Practical Audition (Major Instrument or Voice)
- Date: 3rd to 5th September 2025
- Time: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
You must sit for both, unless you plan to enter through the roof.
What You’ll Study
This isn’t just “come and jam and go.” It’s structured.
You’ll major in one of these:
- Piano
- Organ
- Violin
- Viola
- Cello
- Double Bass
- Flute
- Clarinet
- Saxophone
- Trumpet
- Trombone
- Percussion
- Classical Guitar
- Voice
You’ll also take a minor instrument, something outside your major’s family. For example, if you major in voice, you must pass at least Grade 2 piano. If you’re playing instruments, you’ll learn vocal technique too.
And everybody joins a group. Choir, orchestra or band. No excuses.
Who Can Apply?
You need a bit of both — music background and regular school results.
Education Requirements:
- Five credits (including English) in GCE O-Level or SSCE, in not more than two sittings.
- These must be obtained before admission, not after.
Music Requirements:
- Grade 5 (or above) certificate in music theory
- Grade 5 (or above) certificate in instrument/voice performance
These should be from MUSON or any music exam body they accept (like ABRSM or Trinity).
Now, let’s say your theory is shaky, but your fingers do magic on the violin? MUSON might still take you in, but you’ll do a remedial theory class in year one. And pass it too.

Final Note
If music flows through your veins and you’ve been looking for that one opportunity to take it to the next level, this might just be it. You won’t only get top-class training, you’ll join a network of serious musicians, many of whom have gone on to perform locally and abroad.
So, tune your strings, warm up your voice, polish those theory skills… and apply.
This one no be joke.
