Afreximbank Internship Programme 2026 opens for students and postgraduates

The Afreximbank Internship Programme 2026 is now open to students and postgraduates from Afreximbank member states, the African diaspora, and eligible non-African students whose vision for Africa fits the mission of the Group.

The internship lasts for up to six months. Afreximbank states that the programme is meant to give students a better grasp of African trade issues, trade finance, and the Group’s operating model; in return, interns are expected to bring fresh ideas to its work.

About Afreximbank Group

Afreximbank Group includes the African Export-Import Bank, the Fund for Export Development of Africa, the Pan African Payments and Settlements System, and Afrexinsure.

The Bank is headquartered in Cairo, Egypt. It also has branches in Harare, Abuja, Abidjan, Kampala, Yaounde, and Bridgetown. FEDA is registered and based in Kigali, Rwanda. Afrexinsure is registered in Mauritius and based in Cairo, while PAPSS is also based in Cairo.

Who can apply

The programme is open to applicants who meet the stated conditions.

Eligible applicants include:

  • students with proof of enrolment in full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study in a recognised school during the year of the internship
  • nationals of Afreximbank Group member states
  • students of African descent in the diaspora
  • non-African students whose vision for Africa fits the mission of Afreximbank

The Bank states that it is especially interested in candidates studying:

  • economics
  • business administration
  • finance
  • accounting
  • social sciences
  • statistics
  • law
  • sciences
  • engineering
  • related fields

Applicants must also:

  • be fluent in English or French, with a working knowledge of the other language
  • be aged between 20 and 32 in the year of application

Knowledge of Arabic or Portuguese will be an added advantage.

Children of Afreximbank staff are not eligible for the programme.

Internship timing and length

The internship is offered twice each year, in January and June.

Each placement lasts for a minimum of three months and a maximum of six months. Applications are received throughout the year.

Afreximbank also states that only a limited number of candidates can be taken in each cohort, and only successful applicants will be contacted.

Documents required for application

Applicants must complete the online internship application form and submit the following:

  • letter of application
  • copy of current CV
  • copy of valid passport
  • certified copies of relevant academic certificates
  • recommendation for internship from the school the applicant is attending, including the proposed internship period of up to six months
  • short statement of intent, with a maximum length of one A4 page, stating what the applicant expects to gain from the programme

What happens after acceptance

Successful candidates will be given two weeks to accept a conditional offer from the Bank. If that does not happen within the set period, the offer will expire.

Before the internship starts, accepted candidates must show proof of medical insurance and group personal accident cover valid in Egypt, or in their assigned internship location, for the full internship period. If this is not provided before the start date, the offer will be withdrawn automatically.

Interns are expected to begin within the first month of each internship Season.

Internship location and work structure

The internship is not virtual. Interns must relocate to the headquarters of the Group entity where they are placed.

Afreximbank states that most internships will take place at the Bank’s headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.

At the start of the placement, interns will go through the Group’s normal induction process. They will then be attached to a primary department by the internship coordinator, who will also select a mentor for the internship period.

During the placement, interns will also be rotated across various value chain departments of the Bank, as decided by the learning and performance team.

What interns receive

Interns are expected to cover their own upkeep during the programme. This includes accommodation, meals, transport, clothing, medical insurance, and group personal accident insurance.

Still, the Group says it will provide these on gratis terms to successful interns:

  • reasonable return transport fare to the internship location, using the most economical and direct route from the applicant’s school, in line with the Bank’s travel policy
  • a monthly tax-free stipend of USD 1,000
  • a housing allowance of USD 500 for interns relocating from their home countries, paid at the end of each month
  • hotel accommodation selected by the Bank for one week during the induction period, on bed and breakfast basis
  • transfer to the hotel on arrival and transfer back on departure after a successful internship
  • relevant residence visa for the duration of the internship, where required

The Bank also states that hotel accommodation costs cannot be exchanged for cash.

Other conditions

Afreximbank states that interns are linked to the Team Support grade for competency purposes. Any incidental allowances that may apply, such as travel where required, will use that grade as the basis of award.

Interns are not contract staff or permanent staff of the Bank. They are not entitled to staff benefits.

A candidate can intern only once.

The internship does not promise employment before, during, or after the placement.

Interns are expected to follow the Group’s rules, including those stated in its documents and staff manual. Where there is a breach of Group rules, management may end the internship and all related benefits with 1 day’s notice, without obligation on the part of the Group.

Final report at the end of the internship

At the end of the placement, interns are expected to write a report on what they gained from the internship and how they plan to use that knowledge in support of Africa and its diaspora.
