Al-Hikmah University Professional Certificate in Marriage Counseling

Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, through its Counselling and Human Development Centre, has announced a physical and virtual lecture programme for a Professional Certificate in Marriage Counseling.

The University says the certificate programme will train candidates in marital conflict assessment and management. It also states that participants will learn about the causes and effects of marital conflict and divorce; they will also be exposed to career openings in the field.

Programme objectives

The programme will train candidates to:

  • apply concepts and techniques in the assessment and management of marital conflict
  • share information on the causes and consequences of marital conflict and divorce
  • identify career openings in the field

The programme is open to:

  • counsellors
  • legal practitioners
  • social workers
  • psychologists
  • clergies
  • other candidates interested in building skills in the helping profession

Minimum qualification

Any candidate seeking admission into the professional programme should hold a first degree, preferably in:

  • Counselling
  • Psychology
  • Law
  • Sociology

Duration and study period

The duration of the programme is 3 months.

The study period is scheduled as follows:

  • Friday: 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • Saturday: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Saturday: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Preamble to the programme

The notice states that many marriages in society are unstable, while stable ones are conflict habituated. It adds that the effects of marital instability and conflict habituated marriage affect couples, children, the extended family and society at large.

The University says professional training in Matrimonial Conflict Management will help reduce cases of divorce and support healthy relationships among married couples.
