Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, COOU, says its Business Ventures Committee is set to integrate students into the “Study, Work and Earn” initiative.
The University Management, through the Committee, said many students engage in hawking to fund their studies or add to what they receive from parents. It said many of those students work without structure, direction or a steady path for growth; they simply try to cope with the present economic climate.
Following a series of engagements with students, the Committee said it developed structured openings for students. It said the move fits the vision of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, to make the university economically viable and development-driven under her 3Vs Agenda.
The Committee also said the plan keeps the campus student-centred, while giving room for academic and business growth.
What the initiative offers
The Committee said many of the openings are flexible and fairly stress-free for students.
One part of the scheme covers plastic and waste recycling. Students who take part are expected to collect plastic cans and sachet-water waste until the materials reach 10kg and above. After that, they are paid.
The Committee presented this as a practical way for students to earn money while in school.
How students can join
Interested students are expected to follow the process set out by the Committee.
First, students are to register and obtain an official authorisation letter that permits them to operate within the campus environment. The registration is free.
The Committee added a clear limit here; the registration allows students to introduce and promote products within their immediate lecture environment or academic area.
It does not permit the display of products on tables or roaming sales across campus.
Part-time work for students
The Committee said it has engaged campus business operators to create part-time job openings for students.
The businesses listed include:
- Orange Eatery
- Staff Canteen
- Emlek
- Amlek
- Kenecee Foods
- campus supermarkets
- table-water suppliers
Students who can balance academics with part-time work are encouraged to submit their details. The Committee said this will help it reach them when fitting openings come up.
It also stated that payment will follow an hourly pay structure, the kind said to be obtainable in the United Kingdom and other advanced economies.
Available work areas
The available openings listed by the Committee include:
- part-time student workers in fast-food and confectionery outlets
- table water distribution
- car wash services
- block industry operations
- university brand ambassadors and marketing representatives
- agro-allied business promoters
- campus-based Forex and gadget representatives
- plastic and waste recycling
- university souvenir sales representatives
