Court Orders ASUU to Suspend Strike

The National Industrial Court of Nigeria ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities to end its seven-month-old strike.

Court Orders ASUU to Suspend Strike

The order was issued by Judge Polycarp Hamman on Wednesday in response to the federal government’s request for an interlocutory injunction against the ongoing ASUU strike.

ASUU has been on strike since February 14 to press for increased university funding and a review of lecturers’ salaries, among other things.

Several meetings between ASUU and the Federal Government had resulted in a stalemate.

Consequently, the Federal Government went to court to challenge the strike.

The federal government’s counsel, James Igwe, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), filed the application seeking a court order prohibiting ASUU from continuing with the strike pending the outcome of the suit initiated by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige.

Mr Hamman dismissed ASUU’s objection to the application when he granted the order on Wednesday.
