The Academic Staff Union of Universities has instructed its branches in 20 universities to prepare for potential industrial action due to the alleged incomplete implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement by the Federal and state governments.

The union has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the affected governments and university authorities, warning that strike action will commence immediately after the expiration of the ultimatum if the outstanding issues are not resolved.

This decision was made during the ASUU National Executive Council meeting, which took place at the University of Abuja on August 8 and 9, 2026. According to ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, an emergency NEC meeting is scheduled to be held at the end of August or early September to assess the situation and determine the union's next steps.

The affected institutions include:

• Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University
• Gombe State University
• Plateau State University
• Adekunle Ajasin University
• Ambrose Alli University
• Abia State University
• Kaduna State University
• Imo State University
• Niger Delta University
• Taraba State University
• Northwest University, Kano
• Other universities across the country

ASUU attributes the development to the inconsistent implementation of the 2025 agreement and delays in releasing government funding required for full implementation. The union also accuses some state governments of failing to implement the agreement in their universities.

The agreement, signed in December 2025 after extensive negotiations, aimed to address issues such as lecturers' salaries, allowances, research funding, welfare, infrastructure, and the general funding of public universities. It included a 40% increase in academic staff remuneration and introduced new allowances like the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance.

However, ASUU claims that the implementation has been inconsistent, with some universities receiving only parts of the agreed benefits while others have yet to implement several provisions.

The union also expresses concerns over academic promotions, appointments, and insecurity on university campuses. It has directed affected branches to report security incidents involving its members to the relevant authorities.

With the 14-day ultimatum now in effect, the Federal Government and affected state governments face increased pressure to resolve the outstanding issues before the dispute escalates into another nationwide university crisis.
