The University of Lagos has officially lifted the suspension placed on its Student Union Government, bringing an end to a decade-long absence of formal student union leadership on campus.
The development marks a significant milestone in the institution’s history, as the SUG had been suspended for about 10 years following crises linked to student protests, union-related conflicts, and administrative concerns. Over the years, several calls were made by students and stakeholders for the restoration of the union to ensure proper representation of student interests.
At a formal inauguration ceremony, Bolaji Akinpelu was sworn in as the new SUG President, alongside other elected executives. The university management emphasized that the reinstatement of the union reflects a renewed commitment to inclusive governance and constructive student engagement.
Speaking during the event, school authorities urged the newly elected leaders to uphold discipline, transparency, and accountability in the discharge of their duties. They also stressed the importance of maintaining peace and working collaboratively with the institution’s management to foster a conducive academic environment.
The newly inaugurated president, Bolaji Akinpelu, assured students of a leadership focused on advocacy, welfare, and unity, promising to represent their interests responsibly while avoiding actions that could disrupt academic activities.
The return of the SUG is widely seen as a positive step toward strengthening student participation in decision-making processes within the university community.
