Sa’adu Zungur University has introduced a new dress code policy for all students, in line with federal directives to curb indecent dressing in tertiary institutions. The university management, in a notice signed by the Deputy Dean of Students Affairs, Mohammed Waziri, emphasized that decent dressing is now a priority, alongside the fight against cultism.
All students are strongly advised to adhere to these new standards to maintain their academic standing. The new regulations explicitly ban certain types of clothing, including short or skimpy outfits, tight or revealing wear, damaged or transparent fabrics, and inappropriate styles.
Specifically, the university has banned long skirts with high slits, trousers that stop between the knee and ankle, and wearing underclothing like singlets publicly. Additionally, t-shirts featuring obscene or offensive captions are prohibited, as well as shirts without buttons or those left unbuttoned to reveal the chest.
Male students are also subject to specific grooming regulations, including a ban on plaiting or weaving of hair, and excessive body hair and untidy beards. The wearing of earrings by male students is also prohibited, and colored eyeglasses are not allowed in lecture theaters unless required for documented medical reasons.
The university has established a three-tier penalty system for those who fail to comply with the dress code. For the first offense, the student must appear before the Unit Dress Code Implementation Committee for formal counseling. For the second offense, the student will be barred from academic facilities, including lecture theaters, libraries, laboratories, studios, workshops, and clinics. For the third offense, the student will be required to appear before the Advisory Committee on Student Discipline for further action.
These regulations apply to all students, regardless of their course of study, and are intended to ensure that students dress in a manner that allows for the proper wearing of laboratory coats and active participation in practical sessions.
