The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has addressed the controversy surrounding the proposed lecture by former presidential candidate and two-term Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi.
In a press statement, the University clarified that the decision to deny the use of Oduduwa Hall for the event was based on the short notice provided by the student organizers. The University was only informed of the high-profile nature of the guest less than 24 hours before the scheduled program.
According to the statement, events featuring personalities like Mr. Obi necessitate rigorous planning and liaison with security agencies, including the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS). The authorities emphasized that the safety of the guest, students, and the general public remains a top priority.
The University management debunked claims that the decision was a slight against Peter Obi, stating that the institution holds him in high esteem. The refusal to grant the venue was described as a matter of administrative protocol rather than political bias.
The decision was taken purely in the interest of safety, orderliness, and adherence to established protocols governing the use of University facilities. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, reaffirmed his commitment to supporting intellectual discourse and hosting distinguished figures on campus, provided that organizers follow the laid-down procedures and provide adequate notice.
Moving forward, the University has urged student groups and members of the campus community to comply with established guidelines when planning high-level events. This is essential for maintaining the progress and security of the institution.
