The Federal Government announced that Thursday, October 1, 2026, will be observed as a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 66th year of independence.

The declaration was made by Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji‑Ojo in a statement bearing the signature of the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, released on Wednesday.

Tunji‑Ojo extended congratulations to Nigerians both within the country and abroad, urging them to seize the occasion to foster unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

The minister highlighted that peace and stability are vital for the nation’s progress and called on citizens to honor the principles laid down by the founding fathers, especially their devotion to Nigeria.

“While we celebrate 66 years of freedom, we must remember that hope endures, our diversity is a strength, and our shared resolve forms the bedrock of a stronger, more prosperous nation,” he stated.

Tunji‑Ojo reassured the public that the government remains dedicated to bolstering national security, enhancing public safety, and creating an environment where people can live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations with confidence.

He also noted that the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda will keep driving efforts toward a better Nigeria for all.

The minister called on Nigerians to use the Independence Day festivities to reaffirm their pledge to national unity, peaceful coexistence and the ongoing development of the country.
