The University of Uyo's Students’ Union Government has issued a clarificatory memorandum on the regulation of student social events within and outside the institution.
The directive, released by the Office of the Attorney General of the Union, follows an earlier memorandum by the Director of Socials dated April 21, 2026. This new clarification reinforces the legal backing of the directive, citing provisions from Section 16 of the Union’s Solidarity Constitution.
According to the statement, the Director of Socials is constitutionally responsible for organizing and coordinating all social and cultural activities involving students. As a result, all student-related social events, whether organized by departments, faculties, associations, or other recognized bodies, must be formally communicated to the Office of the Director of Socials.
The Union emphasized that this requirement ensures proper coordination, safety, and accountability across campus activities. However, it clarified that private events such as weddings, birthdays, and burials are exempt from this regulation.
Notifying the Director of Socials does not replace the need for obtaining necessary approvals from relevant university authorities, including Deans or Heads of Departments. Instead, it serves as an additional step to ensure the Union is duly informed of all student engagements.
The memorandum further warned that failure to comply with these guidelines may result in disciplinary actions by the Students’ Union judiciary or the university administration, depending on the situation.
Union officials noted that the measure is aimed at promoting orderliness, uniformity, and effective planning of student activities across the university community. Students and recognized groups have been urged to adhere strictly to the directive in the collective interest of peace, coordination, and proper administration.
The memorandum was signed by the Students’ Union Attorney General, underscoring the Union’s commitment to structured and lawful student engagement on campus.
