Apr, 24Views: 348

The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) has received accreditation from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) for its College of Health Sciences to continue with the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) programme. This seal of approval was given by the MDCN team, led by Deputy Registrar Dr. Nnameka Nwakanma, during their accreditation visit on April 22, 2026.

The MDCN team also approved an admission quota of 100 medical students for the university. Dr. Nwakanma expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness demonstrated by FUTA, noting that the engagement was productive and emphasizing the importance of aligning the College’s operations with regulatory standards.

As part of the accreditation exercise, the MDCN delegation undertook a comprehensive inspection of facilities within the College of Health Sciences, covering departments under Basic Medical Sciences, Basic Clinical Sciences, and Clinical Sciences. The delegation inspected facilities at various departments, including Human Anatomy, Medical Microbiology, and Pharmacology.

The delegation visited the Comprehensive Health Centre Ijare to evaluate the Rural Community Health Practice Centre and other support facilities. They also visited the FUTA Teaching Hospital, where they were received by the Chief Medical Director, Professor Olusegun Ojo. The Acting Provost of FUTA College of Health Sciences, Professor Victor Ukwenya, presented an overview of the College to the MDCN delegation, highlighting its design and organization.

The Chief Medical Director of FUTA Teaching Hospital, Professor Ojo, described the approval as a landmark achievement, stating that the hospital will now prepare for its first Professional Examination. The Vice Chancellor of FUTA, Professor Adenike Oladiji, expressed appreciation to the MDCN team and emphasized the university's commitment to excellence in medical education.

Professor Oladiji also appreciated the Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, for his support in developing FUTA's medical programme through donations. The Vice Chancellor stated that this commitment will be beneficial to generations to come.
