FUTA Warns Applicants Against Admission Scammers

Dec, 10Views: 425

The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) has issued a strong warning to the public, particularly aspiring students, about a surge in fraudulent claims made by individuals posing as university representatives. These impostors circulate messages and social media posts alleging they can influence the Post-UTME Screening Exercise or secure admission slots. They typically direct candidates to call specific phone numbers and pay hefty sums into personal bank accounts. FUTA says these claims are entirely false and aimed at exploiting desperate applicants.

According to the university, the messages originate from scammers intent on misleading candidates, parents and guardians. FUTA stressed that no individual — internal or external — can alter screening results or manipulate the admission process. All admissions strictly follow established Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) procedures and are based on merit.

The university urges prospective students to remain vigilant. Anyone who chooses to engage with these fraudsters does so at their own risk, as FUTA will not accept responsibility for any financial loss. The notice serves as a clear safeguard to protect applicants from falling victim.

How FUTA Handles Admission

FUTA reaffirmed that its admission process operates on rigid guidelines. Screening results are final and cannot be edited or influenced. No staff member is authorised to grant favours or adjust outcomes. Every applicant goes through the same transparent procedure via JAMB, and any message suggesting hidden slots or insider access is a scam.

Common Tricks Used by Scammers

These fraudulent actors typically:

  • Send unsolicited text messages offering “assured” admission slots

  • Post deceptive content on social media claiming connections to university officials

  • Demand payment into personal bank accounts to “fast-track” admission

  • Pressure candidates with fake deadlines

These tactics are designed to prey on the anxiety many candidates feel during admission season.

How Applicants Can Stay Safe

Candidates are advised to rely solely on FUTA’s verified communication channels and JAMB’s official updates. Any request for payment to secure placement should be disregarded immediately. Those unsure about any message or claim should contact the university through its official lines for confirmation.
