The 2026 UTME and Direct Entry (DE) registration is expected to commence in January, and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released preliminary guidelines to help candidates prepare ahead of time.

The registration process will largely follow last year’s format, with one important update:

👉 Candidates must declare their current admission status during registration — whether they are already enrolled in any tertiary institution or not.

To avoid last-minute stress and costly mistakes, candidates are strongly advised to begin preparations immediately. Here’s a clear, step-by-step breakdown of what you need to do 👇

1️⃣ Obtain Your National Identification Number (NIN)

The NIN remains compulsory for all UTME and DE candidates.

If you don’t have one yet, visit an approved NIMC enrolment centre immediately. No NIN, no registration — simple.

2️⃣ Secure a Valid Phone Number for Profile Code Creation

You’ll be required to generate a JAMB Profile Code by sending your NIN via SMS to a shortcode provided by JAMB.

🔑 Important:

• Use a personal and active phone number
• All future JAMB messages will be sent to this number
• Do not share or reuse it for another candidate

3️⃣ Create a Free Email Address

An email address is mandatory and serves as a backup to your JAMB profile if you lose access to your phone number.

✅ Gmail is recommended (fast, free, reliable)

4️⃣ Decide on the Course You Want to Study

Don’t wait until registration starts to figure this out.

• Choose a course you’re passionate about
• Ensure it aligns with your academic strength
• Have a second-choice course ready — you’ll be required to fill it during registration and it can improve your admission chances

5️⃣ Choose Your Preferred Institution(s)

Select the school you intend to apply to before registration begins.

Consider:

• Availability of your chosen course
• Admission requirements
• School fees
• Location

💡 Smart move: Keep a backup option (polytechnic or college of education). You’ll need it during registration.

6️⃣ Confirm the Correct Subject Combination

Each course requires a specific subject combination.

⚠️ Choosing the wrong subjects can automatically disqualify you — even with a high score.

7️⃣ Seek Proper Guidance If You’re Unsure

8️⃣ Understand the Registration Process

JAMB registration follows three major steps:

Profile Code Generation → E-PIN Purchase (from approved channels such as banks) → Registration at a JAMB-Approved CBT Centre

Important Tips to Note

• Correct all NIN and biodata errors (name, date of birth, gender, state of origin, etc.) at NIMC before registration
• Ensure your phone number and email are unique, functional, and unchanged
• If you experience biometric issues, visit the nearest JAMB office — do not allow CBT centres to force registration
• Ensure dual screens are used during registration
• Carefully verify your passport photograph, biometrics, and all details before final submission
