The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, has authorized a three‑month suspension of Prof. Ifeanyi Sunny Odinye, a lecturer in the Department of Chinese Studies, with a reduction to half salary for the first instance, based on the recommendations of a six‑member Special Investigative Panel that submitted its preliminary findings on Friday, 21 August 2026.
The student implicated, Chikamso Favour Okechukwu, has been referred, per the Vice Chancellor’s directive, to the university’s examination misconduct committee.
The Vice Chancellor also extended the committee’s mandate by an additional two weeks to allow it to complete its work and fully address the five points of its terms of reference.
The investigative panel, chaired by Prof. Emmanuel Obidimma, Provost of the College of Postgraduate Studies, in its preliminary report examined two of the five matters. It found Prof. Odinye in breach of Section 5.8.3 of the General and Academic Regulations (GAR) for failing to record and submit the examination misconduct case against Chikamso Favour Okechukwu on the required Examination Misconduct Report Form, and for returning the confiscated phone to the student on the same day, violating Section 5.8.1(iv) of the GAR.
The remaining three issues slated for determination during the two‑week extension are: whether sexual harassment occurred, the identities of individuals involved in any assault directed at Prof. Odinye, and whether any kidnapping took place in connection with the incident.
Committee members are expected to finalize their findings and forward recommendations to the Vice Chancellor before a definitive ruling, which may include possible criminal prosecution, is issued.
The Vice Chancellor reiterated that his administration prioritises the welfare of staff and students, enforces a zero‑tolerance policy toward unethical conduct, and remains committed to transparency and fair hearing.
