Difference Between JAMB Direct Entry (DE) And JAMB UTME

Jan, 28Views: 382

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) offers two distinct routes for gaining admission into Nigerian universities: Direct Entry (DE) and the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The primary difference between the two lies in the level of entry and qualification requirements.

JAMB Direct Entry (DE)
- Eligibility:
JAMB Direct Entry is designed for candidates who have already obtained higher qualifications such as:
  - National Diploma (ND)
  - Higher National Diploma (HND)
  - Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE)
  - Or other equivalent qualifications.

- Admission Level
Direct Entry candidates are eligible for admission into the second or third year of a university programme, depending on the course and the institution’s admission policies. This pathway bypasses the first year, allowing qualified candidates to begin at a more advanced level.

- No Examination Required
Unlike UTME candidates, DE applicants are not required to sit for any examination. They only need to register and fulfill the institution's requirements for admission.

JAMB UTME
- Eligibility:
UTME is designed for candidates who have completed their O’Level examinations (SSCE, NECO, or WASSCE).

- Admission Level:
UTME is the standard entry route for students seeking admission into the first year (100 level) of a university programme.

- Examination Requirement:
Candidates must write the UTME and achieve the minimum cut-off score set by their chosen institution to qualify for admission.

Additional Information
1. Choice of Institutions:
   - Both DE and UTME candidates can select up to three institutions during registration. However, only one institution can be chosen as the first choice, while the other two serve as second and third choices.

2. Awaiting Results:
Candidates can register for both UTME and Direct Entry with awaiting results. However, they must upload their results before the admission process is finalized to remain eligible.

By understanding these differences, candidates can make informed decisions about the most suitable pathway for their academic journey.
