UNIPORT SUG Issues Campus Traffic Safety Notice (Sept 2026)

Sep, 16Views: 13

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Port Harcourt has released a formal alert aimed at students, vehicle owners, drivers, motorcyclists, tricycle operators and all other road users, urging them to refrain from speeding, reckless conduct and any hazardous driving activities inside the university grounds.

The alert appears in an official memorandum dated September 16, 2026 and bears the signature of the SUG Executive President, Hon. Justice Adiele Aleruchi Azubuike.

In the memorandum, the SUG voiced alarm over a rise in incidents involving excessive speed, careless driving, perilous manoeuvres and other irresponsible vehicular behaviour on campus.

The union emphasized that safeguarding students and the broader university community is a shared duty, warning that neglect of campus traffic rules endangers lives and property alike.

Directives to Motorists

All drivers operating within the University of Port Harcourt premises are instructed to:

  • Observe the prescribed speed limits and adhere to all traffic rules.
  • Refrain from speeding, reckless manoeuvring, racing, dangerous overtaking and any other forms of unsafe driving.
  • Exercise heightened caution near lecture halls, hostels, pedestrian pathways, residential zones, motor parks and any areas with heavy student movement.
  • Avoid parking in prohibited spots or blocking roads, walkways, entryways and emergency access routes.
  • Follow any lawful directions given by authorised university security and traffic officials.
  • Ensure that their vehicles are duly registered and operated in line with the university’s regulatory framework.

Penalties for Defaulters

The SUG cautioned that any vehicle found violating speed limits, engaging in reckless or dangerous driving, or breaching other traffic regulations will be reported to the relevant authorities.

It further noted that, following university procedures and under the authority of designated officials, offending vehicles may be seized or impounded, and the owners or drivers could face appropriate sanctions and disciplinary action.

Repeat violations, the notice states, will attract increasingly severe consequences as permitted by university policy.

12-Man Acting Traffic Enforcement Committee

The union also announced the formation of a twelve‑member Acting Traffic Enforcement Committee tasked with reinforcing compliance and promoting safety across the campus.

The committee’s responsibilities include monitoring adherence to traffic rules, documenting instances of speeding and reckless conduct, pinpointing hotspots for violations, educating students and drivers on responsible road behaviour, recording repeat offenders and proposing traffic‑management improvements.

In addition, the committee will coordinate with authorised university security personnel and submit regular reports to the SUG President.

The notice identifies Eze Prince as Chairman, Obiora Victor Ayogu as Secretary and Diligence Chimeru Umeobi as Coordinator, together with other appointed members.

The SUG affirmed that the committee will operate within its granted authority and will collaborate closely with university management, the security department and other pertinent bodies.

Final Warning

The union described the memorandum as a definitive warning to every driver on the University of Port Harcourt campus, urging full compliance with traffic regulations and responsible driving practices.

The SUG reiterated that speeding does not demonstrate skill and poses a serious risk to lives, calling for a safe, peaceful and orderly university environment.
