NYSC AND NATION BUILDING: A PURE ANTITHESIS

Nov, 28Views: 2726

Let me start first by acknowledging the visionary clairvoyance of Major General Yakubu Gowon for the enthronement of a program which, to him, would serve as an umbilical cord unifying the seemingly discordant heterogeneous society called Nigeria. Honestly, your projection into the then Nigeria future which we have today deserves infinite accolade among citizens of genuine patriotism. But alas like a drowning ship betraying all the efforts of a competent captain, the true intentions you had in building a forum of this nature has been betrayed by shenanigans, carpetbaggers whose love to the country is like the proverbial love we have for chicken! Obviously, not a genuine one!

For every mind that cares to know, the contemporary bane of unemployment so popular in the nation today is one of the unfruitful products of National Youth Service Corps. In every policy formulated by the govt., daunting efforts are made concurrently by people with chauvinistic traits to thwart the progressive investment for their own constipated belly. An average Nigerian is today corrupt including but not limited to the current critic, a product of wrong orientation transmitted into us by the almost-gone generation. This, no doubt, is eating us deep and unavoidably depriving us from having a national consciousness. How can we have one for Goodness' sake!

First of all, the teaching profession is rubbed of its strictest essentials of professionalism. At NYSC, every Dick and Harry is made to teach compulsorily even when the art of teaching to them is like asking fish to live on the mother earth, a daunting temptation. This certainly is generating sharp feelings of pain in the stomach of every progressives. Zoologists who were trained to deal with animals are enforced to teach promising leaders of tomorrow, someone that graduated as an expert in dealing with log of woods in the forest is now posted to teach Nigerian children in our various schools. How on earth can an animal expert affect the lives of helpless but promising students positively? Someone should explain to me how a B.Sc in forestry will groom toddlers to an international taste.

When a popular Nigerian artist said "there's fire on the mountain", people paid a deaf attention and kept slumbering under the already leaking roof. Little wonder then that we now have adults who would sag their pants across all streets, argue blindly in educative debate, support treacherous politicians for peanuts and engage in dastardly heinous crimes simply because they were taught by zoologists, groomed by "charge and bail" teachers and tutored by artificial instructors. Nigerians should ask themselves this rhetorical question: if perhaps there is shortage of medical doctors in a hospital where patients are dying and need urgent medical attention, would they bring in an Elect-Elect graduates to take charge of operations in the theatre simply because he can identify injection box?

I know my voice could be so low to attract public attention but when we all chorus it to the ears of these opportunists in the ring of power, maybe our education sector would midwife an outstanding and positive re-direction.

Based on some random demographic sampling done in certain communities in the remote villages in Nigeria, gathered facts reveal that the secondary schools we have are regrettably short of needed manpower. This either affirms the school administrators' engagement in 'ghost work' syndrome thus consuming the tax payers money injudiciously or validates the deliberate and outright negligence of the federal government who is failing to provide the necessary and sufficient human labour that will aid standard teaching in our schools.

Not more than 10 teachers are found in each school where more than 25 subjects and counting are to be taught at this level of educational hierarchy. It is sardonic because the administrators depend on the strength of NYSC who, they believe, would supply them with energetic youth that will be used and eventually dumped to suffer in the devouring wilderness of unemployment after the compulsory one year service. Isn't this a scam of unimaginable proportions to our educational system!

Not to be left behind is the inhumane extortion done on behalf of every innocent "Kopa". From a very reliable source, we gathered that #75, 000 is spent on kits for each corps member and #500 is calculated on each meal consumed while on camp. Honestly, the two thieves hanged by the side of Jesus committed less crimes than these daylight rubbers stealing unrepentantly from the already emaciated purse of federal treasury under the guise of NYSC. These people deserve lynching!!!

You introduced SAED just to extort us for post camp training, you superimposed individual skills acquisition training on us even against our will: something we should have done after our secondary school education.

Educationists who are part of education policy formulation are worst than Boko Haram for they are ignorantly detonating bombs of inevitable retrogression into the future of us and unborn generations. Not until when graduates of zoology stop working in Banks, until when electrical engineers stop working in the ministry of agriculture and not until when dentists stop working as NEPA officials, Nigeria's all round development cannot but be put on hold to witness speedy overtaking by smaller countries.
