The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has announced that public schools in the state will remain closed until the government implements adequate security measures to ensure the safety of teachers and students.
The union's decision follows the abduction of over 40 students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, as well as the killing of two teachers during the security crisis. The NUT had directed teachers to embark on an indefinite strike.
According to the NUT Secretary, Olukayode Salami, schools may reopen once the government secures the release of the abducted victims and puts effective measures in place to prevent similar incidents. The worsening insecurity has created fear and psychological distress among teachers and learners, while some parents have withdrawn their children from school due to safety concerns.
The union has held meetings with government officials and submitted action plans to address the security challenges. The NUT is awaiting the implementation of those measures before reviewing its decision. The union is calling for increased security patrols, intelligence gathering, and the deployment of joint security teams involving conventional security agencies, hunters, and vigilante groups, particularly in vulnerable communities.
The NUT stressed that schools must remain safe environments for learning and urged the government to treat the matter as a priority in the interest of education and public safety.
