The Students' Union Government of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has provided an update on the recent strike action by campus shuttle drivers.
On March 9, 2026, the leadership of the Shuttle Drivers' Association met with the Students' Union Government to discuss their concerns. The association's chairman explained that the recent nationwide increase in fuel prices has posed significant challenges for the drivers, prompting a request for a shuttle fare increase.
The Students' Union Government listened to the concerns and engaged in constructive dialogue. While acknowledging the difficulties faced by the drivers, the union did not approve the proposed N50 fare increment, considering the financial strain already experienced by students.
Following reports of a further fuel price rise to approximately N1,400 per liter, the association requested approval to charge N200 per seat. The Students' Union Government maintained its stance, urging the drivers to consider the students' plight and appealing to them to bear with the students.
The Students' Union Government remains committed to protecting the welfare and interests of all students. It will continue to advocate for students, ensuring that decisions affecting them are handled fairly and responsibly.
The union has appealed to all students to remain calm and patient as discussions continue towards a possible resolution, thanking them for their understanding and cooperation.
