The Governing Council of the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has announced the appointment of Professor Gbenga Ibileye as the fourth Vice-Chancellor of the University. The appointment takes effect from February 15, 2026. The Registrar and Secretary to the Governing Council, Dr Rebecca Aimiohu Okojie, disclosed that the appointment was ratified by the Council under the chairmanship of Professor Zubairu Tajo Abdallah, following what she described as a transparent, merit-driven, and highly competitive selection process. According to Okojie, Professor Ibileye emerged successful after a rigorous interview exercise involving eleven distinguished professors who were shortlisted through multiple stages of screening, engagement, and evaluation, in strict compliance with established guidelines for the appointment of principal officers in Nigerian federal universities. She noted that the incoming Vice-Chancellor recorded an impressive overall score of 91.9, placing him first among the candidates. Professor Ibileye will assume office from Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, whose tenure has been widely regarded as one of the most impactful in the University’s history. “Professor Akinwumi’s administration recorded remarkable achievements in the consolidation of academic culture, infrastructural development, expansion of academic programmes, improvement of staff and student welfare, institutional stability, and the enhancement of the University’s national relevance,” the statement read. The Governing Council also commended all participating candidates for their professionalism and commitment, while reaffirming its resolve to uphold transparency, due process, and excellence in governance within the University.
