Applications are now open for the British Council Film Lab Africa 2026, a film and television accelerator programme in Nigeria designed to support the next generation of African storytellers and filmmakers.

Following the outcomes of its 2023–2024 pilot phase, Film Lab Africa returns with a sharper, more intentional focus. The new edition prioritises strong writing and production skills, cross-border collaboration between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, broader visibility for African stories, and fair, sustainable growth within the creative industry.

2026 Theme: Story Lab

The 2026 edition is themed Story Lab, with a clear focus on scripted episodic content for film and television. This approach creates a collaborative space where writers, directors, and producers can work across both creative and industry-driven platforms.

Programme Structure

Film Lab Africa 2026 will be delivered across six key phases:

1. Scriptwriters’ Online Training

  • 30 scriptwriters selected through an open call

  • Online sessions covering storytelling, character development, series structure, pitching, and long-term writing practice

2. Writers’ Residency and Story Lab

  • 15 writers shortlisted for a physical residency in Lagos or London

  • Intensive guided writing sessions with close mentorship from Nigerian and UK industry experts

3. Filmmakers’ Online Training

  • 60 directors and producers selected

  • Training on episodic production, pitching to broadcasters, inclusive storytelling, and climate-focused narratives

4. Production and Grant Support

  • Selected filmmakers receive grants to produce pilot episodes

  • Support includes script development, funding guidance, and ongoing mentorship

5. Showcasing and Distribution
