In a bid to improve the overall experience for students on its New Campus, Bayero University Kano (BUK) has introduced a new set of rules governing tricycle operations. These regulations, which were signed by the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Mukhtar Ridwanu Bunza, and endorsed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Haruna Musa, are set to take effect from January 9th, 2026.
Key among the directives is the establishment of a fixed fare of N100 for any trip from the Main Gate to any destination within the campus. This move aims to bring uniformity and fairness to the transportation system. Additionally, tricycle operators are prohibited from dictating routes or refusing to take passengers to any authorized location on campus, emphasizing that all students have the right to be transported to their desired on-campus destination from the gate.
The new rules also specify that a maximum of five TETFund tricycles can queue for passengers in front of Ramat Hall at any given time. Furthermore, each tricycle is limited to carrying a maximum of five passengers. For trips departing from the Main Gate, a minimum of three passengers is required, although exceptions will be made in emergency situations.
In an effort to optimize the use of tricycles, the policy permits 'drop' trips only when there are no passengers available. If a single passenger is present, the trip can proceed only with the passenger's consent or as part of a shared ride arrangement. The university has also mandated strict compliance with all traffic and safety regulations for operators.
Importantly, students are warned against engaging in physical or verbal altercations with tricycle operators. Instead, all grievances should be directed through official channels. For any complaints or reports, the university community can contact Malam Abdulrashid on 08035887395, reach out to the Deanery of Student Affairs, or visit the Security Office.
