Due to recent kidnapping incidents and rising insecurity around the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), the Students' Union Government has collaborated with the University Management and security agencies to introduce temporary measures.
Effective May 4, 2026, these measures include a hostel curfew where all hostels will be locked by 8:00 PM daily, restricting movement after this time except for emergencies.
Additionally, all night classes, tutorials, and late gatherings are suspended until further notice. For transportation safety, students are advised to avoid unregistered motorcycles (okada) and instead use identifiable and registered riders wearing aprons. Late-night movement is also discouraged.
Emergency hotlines have been provided for immediate reporting of suspicious activities: the General Security Hotline is 08104278862, the Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) can be reached at 07025684571, and the Director of Transport (DOT) at 07025123177.
The Students' Union Government emphasizes the importance of general safety, urging students to stay vigilant, avoid isolated areas, and keep friends informed about their movements. These measures are temporary and will be reviewed as the security situation improves. The union reminds everyone that security is a collective responsibility, encouraging all to stay alert and safe.
