The University of Nigeria has responded to a report claiming its security operatives arrested journalists from Afia Television. According to the university, the report is misleading and does not accurately reflect what happened.
The individuals, including Mr. Elijah Akuma, entered a student hostel without proper identification or prior authorization and began interviewing students. This raised concerns among hostel residents, who alerted the university's security personnel due to the sensitive nature of student residential areas.
The university's security protocols were followed, and the individuals were invited to the security office for identification and clarification. They identified themselves as Afia TV reporters, and the Chief Security Officer verified this with Afia TV's management. After confirmation, they were allowed to leave without incident.
The university emphasizes that no journalist was arrested or detained. The security unit's actions were precautionary and followed standard procedures to safeguard the university community. The University of Nigeria values its relationship with journalists and upholds press freedom and transparency principles.
However, media practitioners are advised to follow established protocols, including proper identification and prior authorization, especially when accessing restricted areas like student hostels. The public is urged to disregard the misleading report and seek clarification from the university's Public Relations Unit.
Inya Agha Egwu, the Acting Public Relations Officer, made the statement.
