A safety advisory released by the Student Union Government (SUG) of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) cautions students to keep away from the Otamiri River in order to safeguard their lives and personal security.
Distributed via the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Office of the SUG PRO/DOI, the notice specifically calls on incoming students to refrain from swimming, playing, or any other leisure activities at the river.
Student leaders point out that the waterway presents several hazards, including erratic currents, considerable depth, and other related risks.
The advisory also recommends that students steer clear of secluded spots surrounding the river to further limit their exposure to potential threats.
SUG stresses that the caution is issued purely for the safety and welfare of the student body, urging all members of the university community to treat the advisory with seriousness.
The notice ends with a safety mantra for students: "Stay Safe. Stay Alert. Your Life Matters!"
This warning acts as a reminder, particularly for newly admitted students who may not yet know the local environment, to exercise vigilance and place personal safety at the forefront while residing and studying in Owerri.
