Please Note: Nigerian tertiary institutions don’t make use of any outside agent and will not make use of any in the 2024/2025 admission exercise. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has justified the N1.1 billion allocated for staff feeding in its 2025 budget, explaining that the initiative is aimed at maintaining efficiency and addressing operational challenges faced by its workforce.

During a session with the Joint Committee on Finance of the Senate and House of Representatives on Monday, January 13, 2025, JAMB explained that the allocation covers the provision of one daily meal for its 2,300 staff members, including cleaners and security personnel across its offices nationwide.

Purpose of the Feeding Initiative

JAMB stated that the meal program was introduced to help employees remain focused while carrying out critical responsibilities. The Board explained, “This initiative ensures that our staff can stay on task without distractions or risks associated with leaving work premises to source meals.”

The Board noted that the program initially began at its headquarters, where meals cost N1,200 per staff member. However, due to increasing food prices and vendor demands, the cost per meal is projected to rise to N2,200 in 2025, which includes applicable taxes.

Budget Adjustments to Manage Rising Costs

JAMB revealed that the total cost of feeding 2,300 staff members for the entire year would amount to N1.27 billion. However, the Board has budgeted N1.1 billion to demonstrate its commitment to cost control and fiscal responsibility.

The Board emphasized that the meal program serves more than just welfare purposes. “This measure also helps protect our ICT infrastructure by reducing the risk of damage caused by staff eating in offices,” JAMB explained, noting that the initiative was extended to regional offices after repeated staff requests.

Funding Source and Transparency

JAMB clarified that the feeding expenses would be funded entirely through Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), not from federal allocations. “Our government funding only covers salaries for pensionable staff,” the Board stated.

The Board reassured stakeholders of its dedication to efficient resource management and financial transparency. It emphasized that the budget is not extravagant, but a necessary adjustment to rising costs and the need to support staff welfare effectively.

“JAMB remains committed to aligning with operational realities while upholding financial prudence,” the Board concluded.
