The University of Benin is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates for admission into its postgraduate programmes, which include Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s degree, Master of Philosophy, and Doctor of Philosophy. These programmes are offered in various schools, faculties, institutes, and centres within the university.
To be eligible for postgraduate studies at the University of Benin, candidates must have obtained at least five credits in WASC, NECO, GCE (ordinary level or their equivalents). Alternatively, they can have four credits at Ordinary level, plus OND (not pass), NCE, IJMB, or Advance level passes, or any other equivalent. Holders of a Pass Degree or Diploma are not qualified for admission into the postgraduate programme. Additionally, all holders of 3rd class degrees must possess a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) to be considered for admission into the Master’s programmes.
Candidates who obtained a Master’s degree but with a Weighted Average Score (WAS) between 55-59% can only be considered for admission into the M.Phil programme in the first instance. For PhD programmes, a candidate must have obtained a minimum weighted average score of 60% in their Master’s degree. If a candidate is applying for a PhD with a Master’s degree from another university and has not previously taken the compulsory courses or their equivalents similar to those in the University of Benin, they will be required to offer and pass such courses with a minimum of 60% upon admission.
Only students who have the NYSC discharge, exemption, or exclusion certificate can be allowed to clear into the postgraduate programme of the University. As part of the application process, candidates are required to print out referee forms provided in the application page, fill them, and return them directly to the Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies. Applications shall not be processed unless the referee reports are available.
Students are advised to always check the university’s website for courses that require a written entrance examination. It is also important to use a personal email address and telephone number when applying for further communication. To apply, candidates are to purchase application forms online with a valid VERVE or MASTER ATM bank card for the sum of N22,000.00. The form must be correctly filled with all information required before submitting online and thereafter printed out from the university’s website. The following documents will be printed out from the website: application and referee forms. Any form not properly filled will not be treated. All application processes must be completed by 31st December, 2026.
Upon being given admission into the various postgraduate programmes, candidates are to proceed to pay the total amount of Non-Refundable Acceptance fees, which is N60,000.00. Note that the acceptance fee must be paid before candidates can be cleared.
